DIONE – Degeneration of bone due to inflammation

Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases, can directly impact bone health. Osteoimmunology is the field that investigates the relationships and interactions between the immune system and bone tissue.

During inflammation, the immune system releases different metabolic products. These so-called metabolites influence the balance between bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Dysregulation of these processes can disrupt continuous remodeling of bone and lead to bone loss.

The Collaborative Research Center Transregio 369 DIONE investigates the regulation of molecular mechanisms involved in inflammatory processes and aims to improve our understanding of their impact on the skeletal system. A deeper understanding of the immune system’s role in chronic inflammatory diseases forms the basis for the development of innovative therapeutic approaches to improve the quality of life of patients.
