One of our research groups at the Department of Medicine 3 at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), has identified a mechanism that explains how psoriasis can extend beyond the skin and affect the joints.
The team (Maria Gabriella Raimondo, Andreas Ramming, Simon Rauber, and Hashem Mohammadian) was able to demonstrate for the first time which immune cells migrate from the skin to the joints and why these resident immune cells trigger inflammation once they have settled there.
These findings contribute to a better understanding of disease progression and may help pave the way for targeted therapies aimed at preventing the migration of inflammatory cells in the future.
